Risk Groups and Biosafety Levels—What’s the Difference?

There are four risk groups and four biosafety levels which, unfortunately, can lead lab workers to equate the two terms. Although the two are related, the missing link between them is a risk assessment. We will start out by defining risk groups and discussing how to use them as a starting point to determine the risk of an infectious agent. Through exploration of the various additional factors that should be considered for this type of work, we will get to an understanding of the risks involved and the methods that are employed to mitigate those risks. It is this collection of controls that we define as biosafety levels.
