Total Organic Fluorine Profile of Wastewater

Simultaneous total and free fluorine quantification of wastewater

Current methods are insufficient to identify all polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) in industrial wastewater. While analytical methods such as LC-MS/MS and the Total Oxidizable Precursor Assay can measure a limited set of targeted chemicals and precursors with high sensitivity, they are complex and time consuming. In many cases, these methods fail to identify all PFAS compounds and are unable to measure them accurately.

Until now, analysis of targeted PFAS has seemed sufficient to assessing the environmental impact of this large group of manmade, highly fluorinated substances. Consensus is forming among scientists that analysis of total organic fluorine provides a better overall picture of PFAS impact and, as a result, an improved approach to this analysis is needed.
