Liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry enable quantification of compounds present in very low concentrations
Opioid testing is challenging, as many illicit synthetic opioids are designed to elude detection. Immunoassays may be used to identify a class of drugs, however, they often lack the sensitivity required to detect semi-synthetic and synthetic opioids. Gas or liquid chromatography paired with mass spectrometry offers greater sensitivity and enables forensic toxicologists to detect unknown compounds in samples.
